    1. On the top ten list for scouting property to buy: We have to be able to see the Milky Way from the front yard.

  2. I wouldn't move to the expansive dark areas. There are reasons those areas are dark and some are more deal killers than others. The main lit area which is East of that line that runs from Dallas straight North through Kansas, Nebraska then links up with the Missouri river in the Dakotas is the the line between sustainable rainfall and arid nightmare in my opinion. Sure there are some spots with springs and the like in the West but the population density in those areas will make long term sustainable survival almost impossible.

I am biased of course but I recommend settling in the belt between the Western edge of the scattered light and the Mississippi on the East. That long rectangle that runs North/South is going to be the best area for long term survival and early revival. Just stay at least 200 miles from a major light concentration.

    1. Agreed, I also see West of the Mississippi as the better of the two choices.

A normal highway drive of about 20-30 minutes from any metropolitan area will get you far enough out from the light pollution to see the Milky Way. The lay of the land will affect this factor by varying degrees too. My personal belief is that the lack of light pollution is a good distance from a metropolitan area - lines of drift will also be a factor, but the Milky way can be used for a good starting reference.

I hadn't thought about the aspect of "early revival", which could be a double edged sword. Thanks, this might develop into a longer post.

    1. We need to stay close to family, but I'd love to have the wind from Oklahoma for a wind turbine.

  5. Well, we're in our spot and we will more than likely stay here; but we could move if it came down to it.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Yeah, my ideal spot would be too far away from my family, but we can make the best of our situation. That will put us way ahead of 99% of the "walking dead".
