Roku and YouTube

We haven't had cable in several years, and the only thing that we've missed is the bill. Roku has added the YouTube channel a few months ago. So, in addition to NetFlix (<$10/month), and YouTube we have more than enough entertainment for the family.

For you Wolfman...

No commercials + shorter viewing time + more money in our pocket  = winning combination

The other entertainment project on my list is to install the digital antenna and converter for over-the-air broadcasting.

  1. We just started Netflix, too. With only over the air, and sometimes not very well at that, we were starting to get... well, feeling deprived, haha!
At less than ten dollars a month we get to watch a lot of stuff, as you say; and we have better choice than renting at Redbox!
Never tried Roku. Don't know much about it. I take it you recommend it? Not sure if we could spend $50 right now, but maybe in a month or so. :-)

    1. Personally, I'd enjoy the NetFlix right now, and save about five dollars a month for the Roku. If you find that you are running out of entertainment, then I'd go ahead and purchase it. I'll be posting a new post in a day or two to link the channels available on Roku.

  2. I do like abstract math... We actually splurged when we dropped cable- we got a TiVo box that will record live TV, which also plays Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora radio

    1. Bleh- Commenting from an iPad sucks in blogspot. To finish that thought, it has YouTube and Amazon video built in, so we are still in a bit more than $10/mo, but much less than the $140/mo we started from. It is the spendier option, but My Lovely Wife was hard to convince.

    2. Sounds like you did it the right way. Cable is way over priced especially with the availability of streaming video.

  3. Does it get History 1 and 2, Science Channel , Nat Geo, and Discovery Channel? If so it might be a good option for me. Assuming it doesn't rely on fast internet, which I don't have.

    1. I'll be posting a few days with a list of channels available. I really missed those channels when we dropped cable, but have adapted to it. The slow internet is probably going to be frustrating with a Roku or other streaming device. YouTube is not a good reference for internet stream-ability due to the algorithm of the streaming service.

  4. We have a Roku and love it! I am dying to get an antennae!!! We are at the bottom of hills and in the woods so we have to get a big one for outside, I can't wait!!!

    1. Isn't it funny that we get excited about free services in our adulthood. I can remember getting excited about the cable people running the cables on the next street. Gone are the days of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom on Saturday morning, then nothing good on TV until Thursday.
