JUGM Reply To Prepper Hacks

In yesterday's comment Jacked Up Glock Mom (JUGM), here is her link, answered a comment about little known prepper tricks.

"I know!! amazes me that other people have not figured that out yet.

another unknown idea..that I have baffled other preppers with, is Crayons... I know you have little ones, so save them... In an emergency situation, they can burn up to 30 minutes.
And I am sure you know this one being that you are in the medical field , but My dad was a firefighter and on his ladder truck they would keep a nice supply of tampons...I asked why one time, and he said if there is a major wound just shove one in....."

I actually forgot about crayon being used as candles. Another use is to melt the wax, and use it to make a wax shell over cheese, then storing the cheese in a root cellar for long term storage. I'll have to further research the types of cheese that are best suited for this type of storage. Cheese would be awesome in a societal collapse.

Speaking of tampons, pads can also be used to very large Band-aid for weeping wounds. I've seen several people come through the MRI scanner that the doctor told them to use a pad to contain oozing wounds. Change frequently, and be very concerned for infection.

Speaking of Band-aids, we use a cotton ball and a piece of tape for injection sites as an impromptu Band-aid. The picture below is a variation....

Anyone got anymore tricks, tips, and hacks?

  1. This is kind of caddycorner from emergency supplies, but related- After MLW and I came home with Danger, we found those blue absorbent hospital pads very useful, but didn't know where to get more. Then my cousin mentioned puppy pads as disposable changing pads, and they are nearly identical. Lg or XL puppy training pads are only a few dollars per hundred, and useful for all sorts of things, and a lifesaver for diapering parents.

    1. I see a lot of those pads under people at the hospital to help with the feces/urine not getting on the sheets. Another excellent tip.

  2. Oh, and regarding emergency candles-lots of people are using those wax air fresheners these days. With a wick made of kitchen twine, that wax makes an excellent candle. I hang the twine on a stick over a 12 oz can with the top cut out, and pour the wax in every time we change the scent. Once full, a 12 oz candle will burn for about 60 hours. Waste not, want not.

  3. My doctor; also a prepper, told me about the tampons being used for "battle dressings. The "pads" can also be used to prevent chafing when wearing a less-than-perfect fitting pair of boots. When I was in telecom training in the Coast Guard, we used them between our legs and the pole climbing spikes we were using. They worked GREAT.

A wick stuck into a (non-flammable) container of Vaseline will work as a candle as well.

  4. OMG Thanks for the Shout Out!!! Palm-Aide that "African-americans" use in their hair is another good inflammatory product..swab some cotton balls with that stuff and watch it light up...

Yes please research the wax and cheese...if indeed we can use crayon wax, then i will be putting up a ton of it. I looked on amazon once for cheese wax,and it wasn't that pricey..but I have tons of crayons laying around and it would be a good multi use item.

    1. I think I'll stick with the crayons. I've been researching, and will post when time allows.

  5. can of Crisco with a piece of twine, makes a candle also. Elastic wrappings can be held on with masking tape.
