Alert - Evolve Bleach Tablets for prepping

I picked these up at my local store, and I was excited to find a 32 count bottle of Ultra Concentrated BLEACH tablets for less than $3.00.

But wait, here is the kicker. On the right hand side in very, and I mean very, small print it says, " Not for sanitation or disinfection". Really? Bleach should kill pathogens. So, this means it isn't or can't be used for water purification. I did email Evolve about 3 weeks ago and asked these very same questions. Can it be used for water purification? Does it kill bacteria and viruses? So far, I haven't received an email in return.

I decided that if they wouldn't respond, I'll do my own digging around. Bleach has a chemical formula of NaOCl or sodium hypochlorite for the chemists.

Evolve has the chemical formula of Sodium dichloroisocyanurate dihydrate 25-100% , Citric acid monohydrate 1-10% , and Sodium carbonate 1-10%. These were taken from the MSDS, that can be seen here

Evolve is NOT bleach and should NOT be used for water purification.

If you are looking for a granular form of water purification that is easy to store, then take a look at pool shock, it's chemical formula is calcium hypochlorite. It is an excellent form of water purification, and comes in a dry form that is easier to store than liquid bleach. Bleach has a recommended shelf life of 6 months to a year. I've also provided a link to Survival Mom's PDF on the use of Pool Shock for water purification.

So, just an informative FYI to help everyone save money.

I've also include a search engine result from Google for using pool shock to purify water if you'd like to research further into the topic.

  1. I ran into an endcap sale of that same product in many different scents a few weeks ago as well. I had the same idea you had but I passed on them because of the warning label.

    1. Yep, should have taken my time and read the fine print. The really really fine print. Anyways, a heads up for the rest of us.

    2. I think I will avoid putting anything in my body that has the word "cyanurate" in the chemistry label

    3. You should see how much Arsenic is in rice. I’m pretty sure you put that in your body!

  2. What are they for? Laundry? I don't think I've ever seen any here.

    1. One tablet for laundry, or a bucket for mopping. It also suggest using it for cleaning the toilet too.

  4. About 50 years ago when lots of people used cisterns and the water would get what ever ran off the roof, we used to put clorox in the cistern especially in warm weather. It helped hide the sour smell of the water. Everyone survived, I guess the water wasn't as bad as it sounded other than the early days of above ground atomic testing probably coated the roof with some interesting material that got washed into the cistern. But the system worked and could be something to think about as you just stick a hand pump down into a thousand gallon tank.

    1. I'll be doing a roof rain catchment system when we get our homestead. Probably for gray water, animals and garden, and purification if seriously needed.

  5. It's possible that there is bleach in those tablets, but they may have some other inert chemicals in there that may be harmful, or the bleach concentration is to high for water purification. Good to point out to everyone, because I bet someone has bought these for the sole purpose of doing that.

    1. They are chemically different, but both are oxidizers. I am guessing that is how they can call it bleach.

  6. I tried these for washing clothes and they worked fine. Actually better than liquid bleach for whitening.

  7. I bought these as a less-weighty alternative to liquid bleach. I drop 1 in the toilet for scouring, 1 in the dish water for sanitizing dishes, I used 2 for mopping my floors today, these have worked wonderfully for whitening dingy sweat socks. The bottle takes up minimal storage space, I'm assuming that these Evolve tablets are working with my detergents to sanitize things.

  9. Well, I always keep Clorox for disinfecting water. But, if SHTF ~~~I think a Bucket with water with some bleach, tablet, etc. will do something to cut down Our germy paws.
