The Meanest Dad Award Goes To Me

I get home yesterday, Red Ant is in trouble for general kid stuff with the boy next door. Red Ant heads inside through the garage and he throws his Nerf guns down in the garage, and I tell him to come back and pick them up. He keeps walking, but faster. I pick up my pace, and calmly tell him that "I know you heard me, go pick up those guns".

Red Ant makes it to his room and shuts the door behind him. I try to open it but its locked. "Open the door." He opens it, and quickly shuts it again. Well, it's unlocked, but he blocking me from entering the room. At this point, I'm fairly irritated. I head back to the garage and grab a hammer and flat blade screwdriver. I push my way into the room and start to take the hinge pins out. Red Ant is pretty perplexed since I'm not saying anything, or yelling. He finally gets the idea when I pop the door off,  stash it under my arm and head to the garage with the door.

According to Red Ant, I'm "the meanest Dad ever." I told him that I loved him and that if I was the meanest Dad ever I wouldn't care what he did. Always an adventure at our house...

  1. Heh been there :)

Once when my son was mad at me he went and slammed his door shut. Since we have an old house his door wouldn't stay closed without a latch so there were one of those little hook latches on both the inside and outside. Somehow slamming his door the latch actually went into the eye-hook and he was trapped inside his room. The house is prety sound proof too so I never heard him yelling for me to come let him out.

After about 2 hours when I went to check on him and see if he was still mad he was very relieved to see me :)

  2. Oh boy...genius for removing the door, I applaud your restraint for not beating the stuffing out of him, and may I suggest you auction off the need guns since he clearly has lost his d**n mind for throwing down in the garage and not obeying his father.

  3. Red Ant is lucky he has you for a dad, and not my father. My dad would have worn us out with a belt for not rendering instant obedience. I'm not advocating that, by the way. Your solution is better. He won't grow up hating your guts.

  4. Actions have consequences young Red Ant; that was clearly demonstrated with great restraint by your dad. Know that action wasn't out of meanness (you'll be glad one day when your kids accuse you of that) but out of love.
